Good on Camera

From what the WayneWho staff has been able to gather, the Fire Fee meeting this past Tuesday was a shining example of the incompetence of our elected officials. When the cameras were on and they wanted to look good, the Osceola County Commissioners gave rousing speeches about their commitment to public safety and raising the level of service provided to our community. When the cameras and many who crowded the room in support of Station 52 left, the support of public safety faded like a cheap shirt. Commissioner Fred Hawkins, who was screaming the loudest to save the fire station in his district, along with Commissioner Ken Smith voted against the fire department and supported cutting the departments funding further, after patting themselves on the back for voting to keep Station 52 open. While the question of "How can you keep the station open if you are not going to fund it?" is obvious to most of our readers, it was not that obvious to the commission on Tuesday night.

What has become obvious from what we have heard about the meeting on Tuesday night is that the County Manager is doing the best job that he can despite the ignorance of the commission. While some in the community bash the County Manager day after day, we believe that you have to look at the overall decisions to measure his performance. The commissioners have continually pushed to reduce budgets by cutting staff, and the County Manager has done it. The commission wanted the departments to be reorganized to be more efficient and the County Manager made it happen. And finally, the commission wanted to turn the proposed fire fee rates into chance to convert our local democracy into socialism by spreading out the average residents tax money to help subsidize special interest groups. Although the County Manager fought to not provide more government welfare to the land owners who complained they did not want to pay their fair share of this communities fire services, he eventually gave in and took 4.1 million dollars from the residents and paid the bills for the poor landowners and commercial entities. Pure Socialism.

What we find even more disturbing is that the evening really turned into an attempt to cut more employees and more of our services to spare a few land owners the 'burden' of paying their fair share. At one point Commissioner Ken Smith even attacked the local police and sheriff's departments by trying to take away a facility where they keep their weapons training skills intact. It was during this discussion that we believe one of the most important nuggets of knowledge of the evening was unearthed. Commissioner Ken Smith, who has been in office for 13 years, had to have the bond process explained to him. The whole system of how a municipality borrows money seemed too elusive for the experienced politician. Lucky for all of us that his ranting on litter earlier in the meeting made up for his lack of budgetary knowledge during such a crucial time.

The WayneWho staff has watched the attacks on the current County Manager for some time. While some of them are deserved, we feel that he has done a good job of pulling the county back from the brink of bankruptcy despite the efforts of the commissioners to continue deficit spending. For all of those who are looking to point fingers at someone for all of the ills of the county, we suggest you point them at your locally elected representatives. While it may make some Internet bloggers feel better to cry about the County Manager's salary and the clothes he wears, none of it makes any difference when the commissioners are the ones driving the train and making decisions on how to give welfare to their campaign contributors. For us, we were glad the County Manager defended us as residents and was looking out for our interests.

Why don't they subsidize me? Is it because I am only a homeowner? Why don't they find some money and buydown our rate instead of giving it to their buddies?

Old Ken did say that it was the commission that told the manager to fire people, so you might be right.

Just what we need. Cops running around firing guns when they have had no target practice. Thanks Ken.

Maybe ax the tax should get involved and solve our Countie's problems. Let's ask the Osceola chairman about it.

For the past several years they had talked about growth paying for itself and developers paying their fair share, but it looks like that was all a crock to get more homes built.

Ax the Tax Chair Tony Ferentinos has the answers. Put him and Guetzloe in charge! They will do the true will of the people.

Love it. The budget process is basically over and now Ax the Tax come out of hiding. What a bunch of goofs.

I am with the person who wants the county to buy down their fee. I just do not see how it is fair to force the residents to pick up the whole tab. I have no problems paying my taxes to keep top notch fire departments, but I don't think I should have to pay for everyone else. Fair is Fair. Pay what you owe.

I just think it is funny that all the people who bought land thinking it was going to make them rich are whining like the dickens now. Don't gamble. It never pays off.

Forget Tony F. and ax the tax. He doesn't know even when the budget hearings are, the millage rates, total budgets or ad valorum amounts. By the time he gets up to speed, it will be all over. If he really cared, he would have been spoke out long before now. All city taxpayers will be paying fire protection for ranchers that will pay nothing. Does this sound fair to you?

For all these guys who ran on change and doing things differently where is it now? Here we are as residents paying for everyone again. Hawkins and Smith are clueless and it has showed during this budget meetings.

How ridiculous is it that these two Republicans have embraced socialism. I would have never guessed it would have been them.
Why did Hawkins and Smith vote against the ranchers and landowners for having an exemption from these outrageous fees. Thank God for John Q, Arrington and Hartford seeing the urgency of passing this exemption and funding our first responders. They were for it when they voted to save Station 52 and they were for it when the voted to fund Station 52. Unlike the socialists who voted for Station 52 when the cameras were on and then voted against it after the cameras were off and the firemen went home. But people, this is the exact reason our nation is standing up against these types of extreme socialist practices. This commission needs to stop robbing from the poor and giving to the stupid!

Speaking of subsidies, I'm wondering how the City of Kissimmee picked two houses out of all of the housing stock in the city to get grants for hurricane shutters and generators (see today's News Gazette). Was there some city homeowner lottery I wasn't aware of?

I was glad to see that the fire fee meeting turned out the way it did, but I was shooked that two of the commissioners voted against the fire deparment. I understand the commissions need to control costs, but this is the county that they built. All of this growth that was allowed to happen requires fire protection. I want to see my fees go down just as much as the next person, but that will require making cuts in areas other than public safety. These people need to get on the ball.

Tony came out with a lot of solutions to the budget so that County employees wouldn't have to lose their jobs. It all went wiast side. These 3 Commissionerss and you know who they are, are in it for themselves, not the people that they are suppose to represent.
This is just one big 3 ring circus.

The only two Commissioners that voted against a tax hike were Smith and Hawkins.
Chairman Q and two dummycrats were all in favor of it. Do you see anything wrong here?
So who is clueless?

Anonymous said...

No the three that voted for the resolution voted to buy DOWN the fees so they wouldn't be so high on property owners. Hence the term "buy down" in the resolution. If you voted against the resolution then the higher fees were ok to you. It seems to me that the only thing that is high around here is the local Republican party, their so called "commissioners" and the person who left that last post who like those listed, obviously don't like to be bothered with the facts.

The morons that voted against the fire department are the ones who are clueless. If they wanted to actually cut taxes so bad, why did they approve the original budget in the first place? They don't know what they are doing!

It looks like the News Gazette has agreed with WayneWho once again. Is this blog just an extension of the Gazette's editorial staff?

Tony F. has not come up with one single original idea. He has piggybacked off others. He came in late and hasn't got a clue. Getzloe is using him to boost his radio show. Just go to ax the tax website, you'll understand.

John Q. says he's a republican, but don't you believe it. He is bought and paid for and is a puppet for the west side mafia. He says he's a fiscal conservative, but votes opposite every time.

Ax the tax didn't show up at any of the budget meetings for county or either cities. Doesn't seem like they are to interested in actually doing anything or coming up with any options for the people. What are their real intentions besides free press for themselves?
