Editorial Shadows

We think that it is time for the 'Editorial' writers in local mainstream newspapers to attach their names to the 'Editorials' they write. While everyone at WayneWho understands the importance of anonymity, we believe that those who ghost write public policy arguments under the banner of 'Editor', a title which adds an element of presumed knowledge and credibility, lose their right to hide in the shadows. The mainstream use and public nature of journalism dictates that all facts be presented on any given argument and part of those facts should include the background and education of the 'editor' presenting a particular argument so the credibility of the argument could be studied for its merits. Or to put it more simply, in true WayneWho fashion, who is the smart person at the Gazette who is in favor of every tax and fee increase that rears its ugly head even when every economist says that raising taxes right now is the wrong thing to do? We would be scared to release our names to the public as well if we were running around screaming "raise their taxes, raise their taxes." That is like screaming "Harley Davidson Sucks" at the Cabbage Patch during bike week. Not smart, is the nicest way to label the action.

To recap, the 'Editor' was for the Fire Tax, the Security Alarm Tax, the original sales tax increase for schools that was soundly defeated by the public, government subsidized housing (the 'Editor' was for it before he/she was against it), and now he/she/they are promoting another sales tax increase. The pattern of the redistribution mentality of the 'Editor' has become painfully apparent which leads us to question the wisdom of the writer(s). Does a journalism degree qualify one to set public policy on the economics and taxing principles guiding local governments? If it does and the 'Editor' has all the answers, why not step up and run for office to help us fix our problems? This would give us an idea of whether, or not, editorial wisdom should override the democratic nature of our form of government in lieu of more socialistic principles. In the debates we could find out at what level would the 'Editor' like to tax our community? 40, 50, or maybe 60 percent? And if raising taxes is the solution, where is the study showing the positive improvement that we can expect for more tax increases? For all the public knows, Bernie Madoff is scribbling whimsical editorial thoughts to create some positive cash flow for his prison account while hiding under the banner of 'Editor' and having a good laugh as we tax ourselves into bankruptcy. This might also explain the less than sound fiscal policies our local mainstream periodicals have practiced themselves. The now defunct Osceola department of the failing Orlando Sentinel and the downsized and un-circulating press release machine known as the Osceola News-Gazette do not seem to be the guiding lights when it comes to financial success. We are not sure if their fiscal sense should be taken to heart when it comes to building a strong economy in our community. We are also not sure if the 'editorial' advice should be heeded from an organization that seems to be lashing out at a public that it can no longer count as readership.

We have questioned the legitimacy of 'Editorials' before and the WayneWho staff believes they are becoming more suspect in every edition. Supporting every tax and fee increase just does not make good sense. If the 'editorial staff' at the News-Gazette wants a tax increase so bad, at least just pick one and fight for it. We would love to see a real public policy debate from those who hide under the veil of 'Editor,' but we guess taking cheap shots at the public from the shadows is an easier business model to follow.

But if you came out, you'd have to move from your back row seats at Commission meetings, huh?

This would be an excellent my word column. You ought to submit it and see if they will run it under the byline of Wayne Who.

I always thought the editor was Mike Horner.

WayneWho, the kettle called and left a message: You're black.

Seriously, the names of the editors at the Gazette are written in every edition. You call, email or visit them all in person.

Who are you again?

I guess hamilton considers waynewho a real news source?

I myself just read it for the articles.

Luckily I have not received my gazette in about three weeks. The last one that I have shows 4 editors. Wayne wants to know which one of them wrote the sales tax editorial. Did they all work together on it? Did they all agree on it? Probably a team effort the way those guys work.

All it takes to be an editor is to know how to copy the information sent by the county in an e-mail, and then past it into the newpaper program. You don't even have to know how to type or use a phone to verify sources!

"A leader first makes himself believe the lie, thus turning deception into an inspiring form of optimism." ... Dilbert

It was your quote from yesterday and it explains the article today.

I have seen what they do to the rice burners over in daytona... I would not be messing with the Harleys.

Let me be clear, I check WayneWho just to keep tabs on the peanut gallery's latest gripes. Rest assured that I don't think this blog is even a very good un-news source.

Does no one else see the irony of an anonymous blog erroneously criticizing a newspaper for not putting a name to their words?

I seriously would like to see you run for office, WayneWho. At least then your baseless arguments could make it to some pubic forum. This blog is worse than graffiti under a bridge as far as its effectiveness in enacting real change.

Because you're right: when the DBA and others kept the city commissioners from allowing a bad idea for the Lakefront to go through, that was an excellent representation of how the people can yield power against bad public officials. An anonymous blog is little better than spitting into the wind.

I am not sure about the your outrage because newspaper editorials are almost alway very liberal in their views of increasing taxes. This should not be a shock, but it would be nice to know the name of the editor who thinks it is funny to raise taxes.

Graffiti? Put Gemskie on it.

So let me get this straight? Hamilton thinks that it is OK to raise every tax and fee in the county and that it is WayneWho that is bad because they are pointing that out? Not sure I am following you on that one Hamilton.

Gail Hamilton, director of CRA? Now the defense of the City makes sense.

Does it really make a difference who the editor is? We are facing some difficult times ahead. Not only do they want to add all these taxes to the City of Kissimmee, but look at todays Gazette. The County is still looking into raise the gasoline tax to 11 cents an increase of 5 cents more per gallon. When are "We the People" going to stand up and let our voices be heard at these meetings?
The only one that I have read about that has mentioned anything at all about this was Tony Ferentinos in last weeks Gazette.
The economy is bad and not getting any better any time soon. Let's just try to keep everything at the level it is now and see what the future brings.

could this be gail hamilton? the leader of the cra?

I believe Hamilton is pointing out that this blog (which in theory is just a giant collection of editorials with sketchy grammar and zero reporting) is written by a group that remains anonymous, but in turn is criticizing an editorial in a mainstream newspaper that in WayneWho's opinion is anonymous. It's a bit hypocritical, no?

An editorial is written by an editor, WayneWho. Every newspaper has more than one editor, so do the journalistic math.

Everything WayneWho wrote in this blog about the newspaper, could in turn be written about WayneWho. Instead of "Editorial Shadows," just call it "Blogosphere Shadows."

I believe that the last commentor who said "Everything WayneWho wrote in this blog about the newspaper, could in turn be written about WayneWho" proves the point of what WayneWho is talking about. You comment basically states that no one knows who the editor is who writes the editorial pieces. It appears that WayneWho is saying the problem is that Newspapers act like blogs with credibility. The "un-news" articles, as they like to call them, are not usually to be taken seriously. The funny part is, I find myself siding with this blog's "baseless arguments" more often than not, but then again I do not work in government. Good job WayneWho and thank you from the peanut gallery who thinks your "un-news" articles are very good and very needed in our community.

Actually, the editors publish their names as an aside. We can guess who is who. Waynewho is a faceless, often banal critic offering few solutions. We all know the "other" Wayne, the original. Like him or hate him, he at least stands in front of the door not in the shadows.
