“Government Works”

The phrase “Government Works” is an oxymoron if ever there was a phrase that deserved the title. There are times when it may seem like government is working, but rest assured, this is only a set of random patterns falling together that seem to the untrained eye like controlled decision making in action. For this we offer two discussions.

First we have the City Commission meeting from the past week where again they discussed the installation of an expensive fountain in a roundabout on a barely traveled road at the taxpayer’s expense. Government finally worked in this situation. After the commission approved the project at an earlier meeting, two commissioners, Irizarry and Gemskie, fought the continuing of the project in the current form. The other three commissioners favored spending taxpayer’s money in order to create an eye catching center piece on the roundabout. If we heard Commissioner Van Meter correctly, she stated that the aesthetics were worth any amount of money. Martha Stewart would be proud. Commissioners Irizarry and Gemskie eventually lost the debate, but that is actually where we see Government at its best. There was debate on an issue that impacted residents. This has not happened on the City Commission in a very long time, and we welcome the return of debate and hope that it is here to stay. Taxpayers may not always win, but at least our voices are heard. The three commissioners who favored the fountain will have to see how they are judged by the electorate in their upcoming elections.

Our second discussion on the phrase “Government Works” finds itself in a “Letter to the Editor” in the Gazette today. A Kissimmee citizen has written a letter defending Mr. Shipley, we assume because Mr. Shipley’s own defense rebuttal letter failed so horribly against the rebuttal letter written by Tony Ferentinos. In his letter, the citizen exclaims that Mr. Ferentinos does not know how “Government Works” and then defends Mr. Shipley’s honor by listing his long list of accomplishments. You can see the humor in this statement yourself. “How Government Works” is a completely relative statement because it depends on where you are on the great circle of government processes. If you are a taxpayer, you know that government is working to take your money and give you limited services in return, and then ask for your praise on those limited crumbling services. If you are in government, then government is working to expand its operations and help keep you employed. If you are an elected official then government is working to allow you to spill your vision of what the community should look like at someone else’s expense. Yes, Government Works.

How about "Smart Growth"? I think that is an oxymoron.

The rebuttal by Shipley and Mr. Welch don't make alot of sense. Basically they are saying you don't belong in office if you aren't one of our insiders. I know in the next election I will not vote for anyone with ties to the current elected officials. I am tired of what they are doing to this area, and I want to see change that will keep Osceola the great community that it has always been.

Random patterns?? I have watched the meetings for the Kissimmee, Osceola County, and the School Board, and the one thing I can tell you is that these folks think in random patterns. It is hard to figure out how they arrive at a decision sometimes because the conversations do not make any sense. We have to start electing people with some brains.

Mr. Welch from what I understand, is a very dear friend of Mr. Shipley. Mr. Shipley has appointed him to several boards in the past years. This is a way to show his gratitude to his master.
The Good Ole Boys are going to the extreme to discredit Mr. Ferentinos. From what I have read and heard about him, he is a real everyday guy who really cares about our County. My vote is for Mr. Ferentinos.

Isn't there anything more important going on in that town then the fountain and a cow in the logo? When I visit the area I always try to watch the meetings on tv. The people in the audience don't make any more sense the the elected ones.

Where I live, I wish the only problems we had were fountains and cows.

There is a murder every night in Jacksonville, most nights several. Consider yourself lucky.

Mr. Welch. How about we take a look at this guy. In certain circles he is called Ship's Mouth Piece or Ship's ears. Ask him who appointed him to the Planning Commission. I wonder if his rebuttal is bias in any way. What do you think?

YOU ARE CORRECT. MELVIN IS AN INSIDER, REPUBLICAN, CLOSE FRIEND OF SHIP. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE ELECTION PROCESS TO START FULL TIME. WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE FRESH IDEAS AND THOUGHTS FROM FERENTINOS, WHO IS DEVELOPING A TRUE GAME PLAN FOR THE MYRIAD OF PROBLEMS WE FACE AFTER APPX 20 YEARS OF FAILED POLICIES.

Now the word on the street is that Mel Welch is going to be working for the VanMeter campaign for the county race. I guess he is working to pay his dues by helping the old timers keep power. Just hope the people of that district are smart enough not to fall for the tricks.

Let's put an end to the old cowboy hat and cowboy boot politics. The 21st century should be exactly that! It show where Mel's loyalty is. He took the letter that Ferentinos wrote which had nothing no slanderous remarks about anyone and did a whole 360 spin blaming him for throwing the first stone.
HELLLLLOOOOO! Wake up fool. People aren't stupid. They know Shipley started the war and LOST it. By Mel writing a letter I'm sure it will open up a whole new can of worms.

It looks like the Good Old Boys are afraid of Tony. Why else would they be trying to tarnish him this early in the election process. I am tired of politicians saying they are not raising taxes when they do not raise the millage rate. This is a false analogy. Only cowards and liars would use an analogy like this. Here is the truth. As property values go up commissioners ensure a tax raise by leaving the millage rate alone. Do they think we are stupid? If they were serious about keeping the taxes at the same level, they would simply roll back the millage rate so our individual property taxes would remain the same. There is a difference between a tax rate hike and a tax increase. When commissioners vote to keep the tax rate the same, they were really voting to raise your taxes. Come on commissioners. Fess up.

JUST HEARD THAT JEANNE VAN METER JUMPED INTO COUNTY COMMISIONERS RACE. HOW CAN SHE MANAGE COUNTY BUSINESS WHEN SHE COULD NOT MANAGE HER OWN BUSINESS! GOD HELP US!
